Introduction to the Registration Process

It is important to take note of the SABT's registration process that is quite different from the usual.

This page provides an overview of the SABT registration process but please make sure to also read the pages concerned with litter announcements and appraisals.

If an SABT registered female and male Boerboel get a litter, the breeder can choose to announce the litter (only some of the pups or all of them) to the SABT.  At this time the announced pups are NOT registered but they (only the announced ones) are noted in the SABT database as potentially registerable pups and electronic (PDF format) SABT birth certificates are emailed New to the breeder.  More details on litter announcement can be found on the SABT's litter announcement introduction page.

No sooner than the age of 12 months can an announced pup be appraised and if the pup passes the minimum of 75% (subject to change/increase), the pup gets registered and an official SABT Boerboel registration certificate is issued.  Another page talks about SABT Boerboel appraisals.

Please note that a puppy can be announced by the breeder as not suitable for breeding.  Such pup's birth certificate indicates the relevant status and those pups are not eligible for registration.

A dog must be at leat 12 months old before it can be taken into the appraisal ring.

The minimum of 75% could be taken up in the future.  Thus be careful how you write your sales contracts around this minimum figure.

There is still some uncertainty about SABBA's acceptance of non-registered Boerboels and Boerboels registered by other organizations.  The Board reiterated that any Boerboel is welcome at SABBA appraisals, but that certain pre-conditions must be met in order to protect the integrity of the Associations database.

They are as follows:

Full Registration:

  • SABBA accepts all dogs that are presented for appraisal and subsequent registration if
    • The owner is a member of SABBA
    • The dog has a SABBA birth certificate
    • The dog achieves an appraisal point of 75% or more

Development Registry:

  • Dogs may be taken up in the Development Register in the following circumstances:
    • The owner must be a SABBA member/join SABBA
    • The Boerboel must have a birth certificate issued from EBBASA, Boerboel International, or USBA. With USBA birth certificates, the owner must also present the sire and dam's pedigrees.
    • In the event that the required documentation is incomplete, the Executive Committee will consider the owner's application on merit.
    • If the dog achieves an appraisal score point of 80% or more, the dog will be taken up in the Development Registry.

SABBA has gone a step further in relaxing previous conditions pertaining to re-appraisals.  The highest score a Boerboel receives at an appraisal or re-appraisal would remain in force, regardless of how many times the dog is presented for appraisal.

Black Boerboels presented for appraisal will be listed as black and entered in the database as such.
